Okay, so in previous article itself we read about digestive system and its importance. I even mentioned some of the essential oils that are famous for their beneficial effects on gut health.

You must have thought that I did not mention how to use essential oils for digestion and some of the recipes that you can try in need. So I have come up with this article just to showcase ways to use oils and off course some of handpicked recipes.

Digestion and digestive aliments:

Digestion is a crucial metabolic process where breakdown of large insoluble food particles into small water soluble food particle take place. By this way they can be absorbed into the blood and breakdown of food particles yields energy and nutrients which is essential to carry out day-to-day activities.

The process of digestion involves: ingestion, propulsion, mechanical or physical digestion, chemical digestion, absorption and defecation. The smooth functioning of all this processes results in healthy digestive system. Digestive aliments results due to error in any of the process mentioned above.

The underlying causes for digestive problems include poor diet, junk food, lack of exercise, food allergy, food poisoning etc. We all have suffered from stomach problems at some point of time. Most people avoid discussing it as the situation is awkward and uncomfortable. Some of the digestive problems are constipation, ulcers, bloating, stomach aches, gas, diarrhea, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) etc.

Ways to utilize essential oils:

Essential oils are natural oils extracted from plant parts using process of distillation. This is traditional technique and widely used too. Essential oils have long been used in the field of medicine and Ayurveda. The use and application of oils was exploited by ancient people.

Essential oils can be utilized for digestive health mainly through smell and touch. It simply means through aromatic application and topical application of oil. We all know the importance of smell or scent in life. Be it the mouth-watering smell of the food or the scent of our most preferred perfume. We tend to get attract with the aroma.

Similarly when we sniff a food-related essential oil, molecules from oil emit and traverse through the air and enter nose. The sensory receptors in response of it signals brain about food arrival and brain reacts by altering digestive juices to be released in preparation for the incoming food. In this way essential oils increase and improve digestive process.

We tend to limit essential oils as oils with fragrance and aroma. But that is not the case. Smell of essential oils aids in digestion but the topical application of oil also has therapeutic benefits. The natural oil extracted from plant parts penetrate the skin and show improvements in blood circulation, relaxation and digestion.

Essential oil recipes for digestive health:

Now you have little idea which all essential oils we are going to work with, to benefit our stomach. So what are we waiting for let’s learn some recipes.


a) Essential oil Recipe 1

• 2 drops Cardamom oil
• 2 drops Ginger oil
• 2 drops distilled lime
• 10 ml Jojoba oil

This recipe provides digestive support and enhances the functioning. It can be used either aromatically or topically. You can even create this recipe in a roll on bottle which can be portable.

b) Essential oil Recipe 2

• 3 drops Grapefruit oil
• 2 drops Juniper berry oil
• 1 drop Fennel oil
• 15 ml Grapeseed oil

This recipe is preferred for detoxing digestive system and act as cleansing recipe. You can massage your stomach with this recipe or incorporate this in aromatherapy diffusers.

c) Essential oil Recipe 3

• 2 drops Ginger oil
• 2 drops Chamomile oil
• 2 drops Cinnamon oil
• 15 ml Grapeseed oil

This recipe does wonders for stomach aches and cramps and we all suffer from it someday or other. You can simply inhale the mixture and let it reach your digestive system via nostrils. You can even gently massage to get relief.

d) Essential oil Recipe 4

• 2 drops Peppermint oil
• 5 ml Coconut oil

This recipe will help to increase the bowel movement and use of peppermint oil will support in relaxation of muscles. One can inhale or massage this mixture on abdomen.

Note: You must have noticed that in all the recipes, we have inculcated vegetable or base oil in preparation. Essential oil should always be diluted in the carrier or base oil before application. It is always advisable to have patch test before topical application of oil to avoid any allergic reactions. Always take advice from medical practitioner to avoid any unwanted situation.


Digestion is a crucial step in the normal functioning of human body. It is important to know the ways how to keep it healthy for long run. Essential oils put forward natural and organic ways to tackle problems related to digestive system.
